Built Around Your Child
No two children learn at the same pace, so our curriculum doesn’t ask them to. From Grade R through to Grade 12, Glen Afric moves each child through four distinct phases, each one shaped around what that age requires, play and confidence-building in the earliest years, growing independence through primary school, and an International Curriculum preparing our oldest learners for university and beyond. English is the medium of instruction throughout, and class sizes stay small at every phase, so the curriculum accommodates the child rather than the other way around.
Grade R – 3
Foundation Phase
Small class sizes mean our teachers can give real, individual attention while the fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics are unlocked. Progress is tracked closely, lessons are adapted to each child’s pace, not the other way around.
Grade 4 – 6
Intermediate Phase
As learners grow, so does their independence. The Intermediate Phase broadens the subject range and introduces more responsibility, while keeping the close, supportive environment Glen Afric is known for. Learners take on more subjects, longer-form writing and problem-solving, and start managing their own workload with less hand-holding the first real step toward the independence Upper Secondary will expect. It’s also the phase where our hands-on, outdoor-connected approach to learning comes into its own, with more excursions and more room to discover what each child is genuinely good at.
Grade 7 – 9
Lower Secondary
Lower Secondary bridges primary and senior schooling. Learners take on more academic rigour, while building the study habits and self-discipline, they’ll need in Upper Secondary. Subjects become more specialised and assessments carry more weight, with learners expected to manage deadlines and study independently for the first time. It’s a deliberately transitional phase challenging enough to prepare learners for Upper Secondary but still supported closely enough that no one is thrown in without a safety net.
International Curriculum
Upper Secondary
Our Upper Secondary phase follows an International Curriculum, an internationally recognised qualification that prepares learners for university study and career paths both in South Africa and abroad, including hands-on subjects like science practicals. Examination and invigilation fees are payable directly to the relevant examination centre and are not included in Glen Afric’s fee structure. The smaller class sizes that define every earlier phase continue here too meaning even at this most demanding academic stage, no learner is just working through past papers alone.
